The narrator is forced to join Project Mayhem by Tyler, and Tyler wastes no time reminding the narrator, along with other members of Project Mayhem that they cannot question him. The authoritative and arguably dictatorial nature of Tyler Durden is the cause of the narrator’s myriad of problems that involve attempted suicide.
As part of their indoctrination, Tyler seeks to remove any sense of individuality from these men and their lives. Fight club was founded to help these men find their true selves. Project Mayhem strips them of this so that the men will willingly submit to Tyler and never question his methods or motivations.
It is with the events of the second half that things get even more manic, as Durden orders a series of attacks against corporate America via his Project Mayhem, starting with relatively harmless pranks and culminating in a full-blown act of terrorism which involves blowing up the city’s credit banks.
The Narrator, too, is threatened with castration for trying to shut down fight club. This loss of manhood is the worst possible fate these men can imagine, particularly because they feel they have just begun to appreciate their masculinity due to fight club and Project Mayhem. Violence.
The goal of project mayhem is to prove to society that Tyler and his space monkeys, men who follow Tyler, are in control. Project Mayhem is going to save the world “like fight club does with clerks and box boys, Project Mayhem will break up civilization so we can make something better out of the world” (125).
Project Mayhem members are nothing more than the subconscious producing more alternate personalities. This is explains why Tyler gives each member of Project Mayhem a test before getting into the Paper Street House by forcing them to stick around on the porch, he’s basically vetting them as compliant alternate personalities.
Project Mayhem eventually has committee meetings for arson, assault, mischief, and misinformation. The overarching goal is to “break up civilization so (they) can make something better of the world.” U.S. imperialism is Project Mayhem writ large—minus the populist conviction.
While Project Mayhem grows, the narrator begins to feel more and more distant from Tyler and jealousy sets in, making him go so far as to beat up and disfigure one recruit because he 'wanted to destroy something beautiful'. As they walk away from this fight club meeting, Tyler drives the narrator and two members in a large Lincoln Town Car.

When Tyler invented Project Mayhem, Tyler said the goal of Project Mayhem had nothing to do with other people. Tyler didn't care if other people got hurt or not. The goal was to teach each man in the project that he had the power to control history. We, each of us, can take control of the world.
Tyler Durden and his followers in “Project Mayhem” engineer a series of dangerous terrorist attacks, and the Narrator begins to see that Project Mayhem, with its overly eager embrace of the more “primal” aspects of masculinity—notably, aggression and violence—is too destructive, and must be stopped.
